Chameleon Colorworks Optim: Tahiti [97:366, 06.04.2008]

Chameleon Colorworks Optim: Tahiti [97:366, 06.04.2008] by elemmaciltur.
Started: 22nd April 2008
Finished: 05th May 2008
Yardage: approx. 412.5 m
WPI: 18 WPI (plied)
Fibre: "Tahiti", 4 oz/113 g merino optim from Chameleon Colorworks given to me by ClaudiaWarner
Wheel & Settings: Kromski Minstrel, spun worsted on 12:1 ratio in double-drive mode, navajo-plied on 16:1 ratio in double-drive mode.

This thing is really soft and the yarn has a great drape. However, I think that the plying compromised the shine of optim. I broke the singles a couple of time plying...but no big deal. It's thick and thin in some place, but not too bad. Overall it's pretty much lace-weight.

I have no idea what this means.... yet: spun worsted on 12:1 ratio in double-drive mode, navajo-plied on 16:1 ratio in double-drive mode.

I still don't understand the difference between worsted and woolen, but i do know what Navajo-ply means, thanks to your video!

: The ratios tells you how many rounds the flyer goes in each round that the wheel turns. So, with 12:1, it means that flyer turns 12 times when the wheel itself turns only just once. Double drive is just a mode of the wheel where the wheel/drive band is turning both the bobbin and the flyer at the same time unlike in single drive where the drive band turns either just the flyer (flyer-driven) or the bobbin (bobbin-driven).

Worsted spinning eliminates most of the air pockets out of the spun yarn whilst woolen incorporates more air pockets into the yarn. The result for the first is a strong and durable yarn with a certain sheen to it whilst the latter will produce a more lofty, fluffy and warmer yarn.

I love it! We both did Tahiti ;)

I'm still not sure if I like spinning Optim or what plans I have with my skein. Of course, I wish I had more time to spin ... and knit *sigh*.
