Used on the 1955-58 British Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by Dr Vivian Fuchs. This is one of the three tractors of the New Zealand component, led by Sir Edmund Hillary, that laid supply depots from the Ross Sea towards the South Pole to meet the oncoming main party.
After Hillary's unauthorised dash for the Pole, this tractor was used at the Pole station, then at McMurdo Station, before being brought to Christchurch.
Though it looks unusual, it is hardly modified from the standard TE20. The extra axle helps support the track, which is readily removable for use on firm ground. The canvas screen gives the driver and engine some meagre protection from icy winds.

Congrats on almost making it to the views:300 with this one. I always find it strangely interesting the unexpected shots in my stream that get so much attention while other shots I think are more deserving and get ignored.
Flickr is a strange little world really. =)

Thanks. I have posted three photos of machines like this used in the antarctic, and most days they get at least one hit each from web search sites.

Thank you for the return visit. Strangely, this is far and away my most viewed shot, most of the views coming from internet search engines. A very popular machine.
