Maui Destination - Haleakala Crater - Sunrise

    Newer Older

Best On Black. The trip up to the Haleakala Crater takes about 3 hours. This means getting up at 2:30 to be at the rim of the crater by 5:00. The drive from Wailea takes you to North Maui, and then up the long winding mountain road of Haleakela national Park. When you get to the crater rim, you see a dim glow of the gathering dawn. The show last for about half an hour. Ultimately, this is the moment everyone waits for... Sun crests the horizon. It's also the most difficult thing to capture. At 10,000 feet The air is so pure and sun so intense that the dynamic range is pretty much impossible to capture.

This is an HDR shot, but even with HDR, the Flare at the higher exposures pretty much overwhelms image content. After a bit of work, I was able to pull this image out. It doesn't match what I actually saw or experienced, but is a reasonable facsimile.

Beautiful shot of the sunrise over Haleakala. The 6 hr hike down from the top is also amazing, like a moon walk.
