These guys are beautiful as juveniles. Love the orange bands and the way the fins have clear edges. Found this one on a night dive at Nudi Falls. They're very graceful, but shy -- took a lot of manouvering to get a front shot - he kept turning away.

when i saw its picture on a book before, i
thought the outer orange lines were being
drawn :p
so when i actually saw one i was awed by
them!

We just got back from an expedition to
Sulawesi and we did Bangka Island and Lembeh
Straits. We shot some really good HD video
footage that included a slighty larger
version of your great Platax pinnatus
juvenile batfish, but the one we videoed was
twice the size, and the sides were just
starting to get the lighter brown band.
Anyway, we spotted him the first day, but
it was just when we were done diving for the
day and I decided to just snorkle bout in teh
shallows right in front of Mimpi Indah
Resort., so naturally I did't have the HD
rig....
We looked for him every day, even up to teh
last dive of the last day, and 10 minutes
before the end of the last dive of the trip,
there he was again, and we got some great
macro footage of him although the water was a
bit filled with debris.
On that same dive I spotted a mated pair of
the longnose filefish that are torquoise in
color with orange spots, known as
Oxymonocanthus longirostrus, but I only got 4
fleeting seconds of them hightailing it into
the coral.
Anyway, great photo and rare subject!
