The Other Side...

The Other Side... by Ed_Z.
This was a concept shot I had the idea for for a while... After a loooong day of shooting, Maureen was fantastic enough to put up with my shenanigans trying to put this one together (the lighting was tricky).

Lighting info: 580exII from the left, snooted lighting up the face. 550ex low from in front of camera providing the light for the left side of the image, and casting shadows. AB800 behind the door blasting out for the streak of light/general illumination.

Of course about 20 frames into the shot I realized I had flipped my camera into MF mode, and they were all out of focus (it was too dark to tell through the VF but I was wondering why my focus confirmation points weren't lighting up). Luckily I realized early enough and was able to get a couple of good frames.

processed almost entirely in lightroom, mainly just some curves and toning/desaturation. PS just to add some grunge/texture/noise for effect.

I'm really happy with the end result, it's pretty much exactly as I pictured it in my head...

Great shot. Nicely composed and lit. The offset horizontal really sells this thing. Wow!

Thanks!

Wiz- you know it's funny you mention that - I first tried framing it both horizontally and vertically, and wasn't really happy with either... So I tried it with the skewed camera angle, and even though I often find that "gimmicky" or cliched, it totally worked for the shot... Guess it just goes to show never rule out any technique...

(except maybe the portrait in the brandy snifter... I think it's safe to consign that one to the annals of history...)

That's one awesome shot!
The POV definitely works with the angle. It all just plays together nicely...

Excellent shot. I esp liked how you visioned the shot and transformed it into reality. Well done.
