Thabo Mbeki, president of South Africa![]() a man of moral courage. Right now, he's facing criticism from his own
party over the recent firing of the deputy president, who has been accused (with justification, apparently) of a "corrupt relationship" with a businessman friend. Mbeki's former allies claim that it's a political plot by Mbeki to get rid of a potential challenger, but in fact it's more a situation of someone regretfully losing a friend (and a real hero of the revolution) over a matter of principle . A personal tragedy, but a real victory for transparency and the rule of law. CommentsWould you like to comment?Sign up for a free account, or sign in (if you're already a member). |

In the Festival de Cannes this year there was a special selection called: Tout Les cinémas du Monde, where productions from countries with little participation in the global film industry lines where featured. South Africa was one of the chossen countries. The compromise of the local government in these last years by helping and supporting this industry with funds and laws is allowing south african artists and directors to show up their talent worldwide.
I don´t know if are already back from SA but let me recommend you watching "U-Carmen eKhayelitsha", a witty, uptodate and surprisingly telluric remake of the homonymous Opera, by local people, filmed in a very modest local town close to Capetown. Very interesting piece.
