2008-03-04 Starting the 2008 Garden |
Here are a few pictures of the garden I
started for this year.
As you can tell from the pictures,
pretty much everything I planted is for
the purposes of eating.
The reason I planted so much in the
garden is two fold: the primary reason
is that I can get instant fresh veggies
and herbs which taste great and I know
what went into them. The second is that
it is eco-friendly. It will mean that we
need to get less food from far away and
spend the energy and fossil fuels to get
it to our house. Admittedly, this will
only account for an estimated 2% of the
food that we eat at home, but heck, it's
better than nothing!
In this year's garden:
Lime, lemon, rosemary, lavender,
quince, peppermint, coriander/cilantro,
white pomegranate, jalapenos, serranos,
cayenne, poblanos, bell peppers, chives,
strawberries, oregano, parsley, thyme,
grapes, carrots, green beans, green
onions, white onions, red onions,
garlic, broccoli, and finally, potato.
Most of this is on a drip system, so it
uses only a small amount of water. This
saves not only water, which is getting
pretty scarce here in California, but
also the energy used to pump the water
to our house.
Also, check out greening my house, which is a blog about things we are
doing around the house to be more
eco-friendly.
