He fell over on Boxing Day and banged his eye on the edge of a low table - he's currently starting to almost/maybe/perhaps/when he can be bothered walk so is tumbling all over the place. The tiny red mark shows the area of impact, but apparently in cases like this the skin round the whole eye shows bruising.
