Viking Invasion Project

The Viking shield would normally be around 80-90 cms in diameter - this one looks about right. It would be made from pine or linden. Here is more information on the shield:

Helmets were made from iron and leather. Want to learn more? Follow the link below.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viking_Age_arms_and_armour#Helmet
"Skilled spearsmen are said to have been able to throw two spears at once using both hands, or even to catch a spear in flight and hurl it back with deadly effect."

This man has an axe, but no shield. Can you think why? Have a look at the BBC history link to check your answer.

Is this his shield or a spare?

Ruro's added a link to the picture but not moved it into place above a helmet. Only she can do this when she comes back to the photo, though. Nice one, though - very quick off the mark!

My nine year old daughter is doing a project week at school on the Vikings here in Denmark so I'll make sure she sees this picture.

Just a little note. The Vikings didn't throw spears as stated in the pop up dialogue box, they threw javalins(which would be about 3 feet long).

Thanks for the insight and for adding to this example of how Flickr can be used in the classroom. It's an even better example now that one of the Vikings themselves has helped us out ;-)

What's even better is that this is not a comment from an expert that we actively sought out. It comes from someone who found this picture and shared his expertise just because he wanted to. Brilliant! Flickr is about community, not just pictures.
