Union Station, Ceiling (2008)

Union Station, Ceiling (2008) by edlimphoto.
Architect Daniel Burnham.
Opened 1907

I fell in love with Union Station after arriving at Washington DC for the first time in 2004. I did an early Panoramosaics from the ground level, but I was always itching to go back and do the gloriously detailed and patterned ceiling.

The Contact Sheet for the original photos are here.

Wonderful! I love that building also and just posted a textured shot of one part of the ceiling. Your mosaic really highlights the beauty of the coffers and gold leaf.

I stumbled across this in the group and was speechless. How did you do this one? Are you using a pano head or rotator of some kind? Is it shot entirely from one vantage point in the center of the floor or is it a mapping done from multiple positions? I hope you don't mind me prying! You amaze me again and again.

memorycardfull: Thanks for your response! This was a hard one to do; I have had a few years since I first went there to wrap my head around how to represent a full hemisphere of images.

It was shot from one vantage point, smack-dab in the center, just as you thought. I was not able to use a tri-pod, but since I had lots of practice over the years, I was able to do without. However, it did lead to a lot of post-production rotating and other hassles.

I then started taking my pictures, row after row. ALWAYS starting at the flower arrangement (at the bottom), and going across to the letter "S" (at the top). Once I settled on the method, the rest fell into place.

Wow. No tripod? You know I like that! Very well done indeed.

Thanks for sharing a little of your technique. I have learned a lot from you here on Flickr.
