Philippines, Manila 1968-69 018

Philippines, Manila 1968-69 018 by edgarjlaw.
The old Congress building. At the time these photos were taken, the capital was Qeuzon City (from 1948 to 1976), so I don't know if these buildings were used for government purposes. They didn't look busy.

Bus A Bus says:

i remember this bus. that's a manila de dios transit which runs the Obando, Bulacan/Sta. Cruz route and that's a plywood bodied bus on a ford trader chassis. De Dios Transit which runs the quirino district/kamias/quaipo via morayta/ayala bridge also had similar buses except for the design of the front end.

Now that You mention the name De Dios Transit, I remember seeing the name on many Manila buses.

It's not widely known outside the Philippines that Manila has a great collection of Neoclassical buildings dating to the American colonial period -- buildings that would not look out of place in Washington DC. Despite having been heavily damaged during WWII, they were faithfully restored after the war. When I last visited in 2002 this building housed the National Museum.

Yes stevechasmar, the two old neoclasical buildings, the Finance and Tourism building fronting the Agrifina Circle including the Old Congress Building now houses the National Museum. They are giving life to these buildings which are truly magnificent.

When I was living in Manila in the 1980s, I heard a story that the Japanese commander who was trying to fight off the American liberation of Manila at the end of WWII committed suicide in the old Finance building rather than surrender. I wonder if the story is true. That building is pictured in the next photo of edgarjiaw's photostream by the way.
