Impossible Move

Impossible Move by Edwin Dalorzo.

There are certain things in life which are simply impossible. One should learn to accept them.

This photo is nothing but a terrible mistake. I was just playing the lens aperture and shutter speed, and tried a few shots of my chessboard. I did not realized that the move I caught in this one was impossible, from the chess rules point of view. Jeremy Hopkins made me realize of that, so I simply changed the named to the photo.

From the chess point of view this is a fiasco, but I hope there is something valuable from the photography point of view.

You are right, Jeremy. I did it by mistake, because I was just playing with the pieces. From all the captures I took, only this one turned out just fine. Unfortunately, against the rules of chess. I have changed the name of the photo. Perhaps, although incorrect from the chess point of view, the suggestive name creates certain impact and helps exploration.

{This definatly documents well the colours and meaning of chess. I like how the lighting made the side with the black peice seem darker which emphases the trouble its currently in. All the inportant parts of this picture are well focused and the DoF worked out well. As for composistion i would of liked to have seen this set up at a more straight foward angle, especialy as this would of cut out the black object to the left which seems irelvent to the scene. Overall i would say this is a nice set up that gives the viewer alot to see and think about. }

I am in awe of the title. With or without the reality of the impossibility of the sitution, it just sort of fits chess! The crop and lighting are also wonderful. This is a fave, no doubt!! My only criticism is that the black piece bleeds into the black background a bit too much . . . it loses it's shape. Maybe this was intentional, but I would like to see a tiny bit more contrast there.

I had once heard something to the effect that, "...nothing is impossible, however, there are things that are improbable."

Humanity itself has evolved from cave dwelling nomads, who used sticks and stones as tools and weapons; to highly intellectual beings with atomic and nuclear technologies to either help, or destroy, all of mankind.

When someone tells you that you "can't" do something, or that you'll never "be" anything more than who you are; is only trying to intimidate you. "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, you will acheive"

Philosophy lesson over. :-)

As for this wonderful photo.............

I love the set up here. The pieces and position of the hand are practically perfect.

I love the lighting here, although is some places, it does look a little overexposed (particularly on the lighter chess pieces), but that's nothing a little more contrast wouldn't help.

I've only played chess a handful of times, so I would never have guessed that the "white" pieces couldn't check the "black" pieces so soon. :-)

I also really like the shadow of the hand over the board. Very sharp!

The artifact to the left, that is half in frame is a bit distracting, but that could be edited out, or blurred to bring focus back to what's happening on the board.

Overall, I really like everything about this photo. Very well done!

I like the change in title and i actually think it adds to the photo. I hope you try the picture again making it a possible move along with taking into consideration the good criticism by the people above and then retype your original description that you had with the photo for i liked it but can't quite remember all it said.

Thanks SmithTracing.

Jeremy, I will certainly try to work on your recommendations. I will revisit this concept later again and this time I will do it right from the chess perspective :-D

Thanks for the awesome feedback and rating RedSrd, I will certainly try the change of perspective.

Thanks JRab, thanks for the fave and the encouraging words. The crop was not all intentional. Unfortunately, my desk lamp go in the way and I could not entirely remove it at the end.

Wow, Dysonstarr, that is indeed a philosophical lesson. You are totaly right. It is better not say something is impossible, things change over time, and things that used appear impossible, not are not so much. Thanks for the awesome feedback and critiques.

Thanks, ShutterDepth for your encouraging words and critiques.

I think it's funny that you changed the name of the picture to fit the photo taken. And yet the title is one of the best parts. I think it adds to the fantastic composition, and I would have thought it entirely intentional if I had not read otherwise.
I love the contrast and texture, and the slight bit of hand.

I really like this one. The B&W tones are beautiful. Composition and lighting are just good. The PoV is perfect. I think I will try a shot like this myself...
