The view across the Golden Horn from Perşembe Pazar, Istanbul, April 2008.
The photographs in this website are part of an Archive that I am creating, to record the sights, sounds and people of Perşembe Pazar before it is swept away for all time by the forces of modernity.
The City council is planning to demolish this area at some point in the next few years.
Perşembe Pazar has been here as a functioning area of shipping workshops for the better part of 800 years. It is a gentle, multicultural community of Turks, Greeks, Kurds, Armenians, Muslims, Christians and Jews. It is a haven of conviviality - a small corner of heaven on earth.
