Just to provide a little bit of contrast with all the gushing praise, this is actually not a very good photo. I think the composition is fantastic, but the image is grossly oversharpened and oversaturated; you can really see how bad it is as you look toward the top where the buildings are farther away. The full size version looks absolutely awful, but it's quite an eyesore even at the default size.

Very cool perspective, nice composition, and you're lucky to have the opportunity to shoot from high above the city. But I gotta say…next time borrow a decent camera and don't do such excessive post-editing.

Sorry, I hope you won't find my comments offensive. I'm just trying to help you see what's wrong with this so you can improve. Having dozens of people say your photo is "amazing" makes you feel good, but doesn't really make you any better at taking pictures. I think you definitely have an eye for photography that is worth developing, otherwise I wouldn't say anything.

I honestly wish you the best and hope to see more from you!

The criticisms are partially right. The pseudoHDR process and noise reduction I use on the single RAW files I shoot in flight can be rather brutal when viewed in large size. The monitor on my laptop is fading and had I processed this one on my desktop I likely would have seen what this writer sees and made adjustments or reprocessed. As suggested, this is also a limitation of the equipmentl. The G10 is passable for some applications but not adequate to others. It has a small sensor. It is however quite portable and an excellent all-purpose amateur camera.

That said I did deliberately sharpen and tonemap this to make the edges of the building and differences in glass color stand out as much as possible in the default size. Flickr is a thumbnail and 500x500 medium for the vast majority of viewers and the photo needs to be impactful in that resolution. If the writer finds this to be an eye-sore it is a matter of taste.

Thing is Alison, I think you got the quote slightly wrong. I would lean toward "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar". This kind of over-the-top slagging is something that happens a fair bit on my more popular photos (and as we know popular does not equal best). I read it as an attempt to attract attention. After all, it is a social networking site and you have to make your presence felt somehow. ;-)

I think one must take into consideration subject matter and perspective when judging the quality of a photo. The fact that this is an awesome aerial shot of a very cool city adds to its credibility and perhaps allows the viewer to forgive some perceived technical imperfections.
