In Melancholic Grace

In Melancholic Grace by -diya-.
I'm not a big fan of wedding shots. I'm more attracted towards wedding food, and - of course - staring at the lenses the other photographers are using.

In spite of my *natural* disinterest in wedding photography or whatsoever, I took a couple for my cousin, and ended up sort of liking this one.

I love winters! Weddings come pouring in and so does biriyani, murgir roast and borhani

@ Sweet Venom:

This was shot way back in July when I was merely dreaming of buying a dSLR. Kind of *accidentally* managed to cough enough cash for it August. Life IS splendid!

H5 is a kickass camera. I'm so happy my sister ever bought, irrespective of who was meant to use it. ;)

Thanks! (=

Wedding photography is so much fun, how can you not be a fan? The only thing standing between that and me is my mom *squints in exasperation*

Nice angle btw.

DUDE, I had teeny watermarks until the day I realized people were *stealing* my pictures FROM Flickr (in spite of the incredibly securities I've put up) WITH the tiny watermark and making posters out of them.

WTF. O_O

Ow well, it's fun.. I guess. I think I try too hard to concentrate on the quality of the images as opposed to simply having fun while clicking, and thus, found the task exasperating. =|

Why not? Wedding photography can be of very high quality. There are people who specialize on it and some do awesome works. I am sure you have seen them. I guess, it can be a bit stressful if you are the main or only photographer. Otherwise, it should be real fun to do.

I used to love doing wedding photography long time ago when I didn't have many gears or ideas. Now, I am sure I will do it thousand times better, but I feel lazy now, I feel I won't be able to concentrate for many hours at a time. Still, I want to do it for two persons I love most (my dream, you can say=), do the whole thing starting from gaye halud and make them my best photography ever. She is one of them =)

(btw, apurbo'r shathey kotha hoyechhe, ami ajkei pathiye dichchi, duek din er modhye check korey dekho, i will send you a confirmation mail)

FWIW, in my book wedding photography's quite cool as long as you're not actually responsible for it. Never having been in those shoes, I couldn't possibly comment on that.

Most of the stuff I've shot is a lot of fun but well, I never know if it's cool to post 'em in public without prior consent from the merry couple, which of course I neglected toget seeing as how I was only taking the photos for fun =P

I've found that wedding photography really is heavily dependent on your equipment. You literally need fast lenses that ideally autofocus, twistable flashes, diffusers (optionally, but they're very, very handy)

And really, the best parts are before the reception/ceremony, backstage, because there are billions of folks crowding and messing the good moments afterwards and even if they're not, the pressure is bloody insane, from what I gather.

I've had the most fun walking about with a long, fast lens and with my flash bouncing off the roof or wall as I find handiest, from the unoccupied vantage angles because everyone looking for drama shoots wide and in the couple's face, which is the worst place to be, plus the bride hates you for it, as a rule =P Some of the truly good shots I've got are chummy candids, and ones I got only because I'd already established myself as inoffensive and harmless for a good hour or so before that. My money, I'd have gotten better if I'd had the day to blend into the background - always helps =)

@ Samia'pu, Aftab Bhaia and Iftekhar:

I was the main and only photographer. I did two wedding shoots so far, both within the family and it was very tiring to keep shooting within the same frame of a thousand and one relatives plus the bride and groom. I felt lost, bored, annoyed, hungry (they wouldn't let me eat because they just CANNOT stop taking pictures) and out-of-place. I also don't enjoy deadlines when it comes to shooting and wedding - so far - has imposed a date on me, so I have to edit a million shots and give it to the happy couple. I like editing when I feel like editing, and for me, it's an art by itself - so I hate handing over half-hearted efforts.

Maybe it's just the bad experience that has left a mark in my heart. If I weren't the main photographer, I probably would get more freedom and absolutely love shooting pretty brides. Come to think of it, I do have a couple of dream shots with brides!

I have another cousin marrying very soon and he has (un)fortunately assigned me as the photographer. Let's just hope it's an awesome experience! (=

Aftab Bhaia, would you be interested to do my wedding photography? I don't trust too many people when it comes to capturing my Pepsodent grin and I have a feeling I won't be grinning so much at my wedding. I think you have a shot at bringing it out.

awww. Sorry to hear about the bad experience, Diya. I was the main photographer for one wedding (the engagement/akdth part) and it was a *very bad* experience too. I think, being the main/official photographer in a wedding at this point is going to give us that not so pleasant experience because I have a feeling people don't take us seriously (even if the happy couple or their immediate family does so). I'm contemplating on being an accomplice though - that will take the pressure off several folds, and tune up the fun several folds too =P

When are you getting married diya? Hopefully soon before I quit photography? =P Seriously, when? If I can manage to come to Bangladesh during your marriage I will love to do yours, but not as a main photographer though. I am sure there will heaps of your (and his) friends with camera. I want to take pictures in a relaxed way.

I think a female (especially a relative) photograoher has some advantages. You can go inside in bride's room anytime, be with the bride and take some informal or posed pictures to capture the mood and emotions before the actual ceremony, dhoro jokhon meyeke shajano hochche baa taro agey, by the window etc.. People always concentrate on actual ceremony othoba after meye'r shaj puropuri hoye gechche or the stage events. I think more can be done before and after the stage formalities. Amar kichchu idea achche ei beparey to do something different.
Meye photographer der kichhu oshubidha o achhey. You can't be that pushy (ami dhakka dhakki korey position niye nitam) or be in an unusual position (lying on the ground for example) to take pictures from some interesting angles in public.

I am sure your next experience will be awesome. Plan some photos beforehand (for example, chheley aar meye'r paa as they are walk together with some interesting background or bokeh) and be assertive about what you want them or public to do. Try to use natural light to take some moody pictures in bride's room or in bashorghor without flash. Have fun=)

btw, I am really honored that you wanted me to take your marriage pictures=)

PS, tomar flash ki agey work korto?

@ Aftab Bhaia,

I'm not getting married anytime soon. HOWEVER, when I do.. please please do be still *interested* enough in photography to take a few shots. Don't worry - I won't make you the main photographer.

As you've mentioned, a female wedding photographer does have those added advantages. However, those are only applicable when you're from the bride's end of the family or is hired by the bride's family. Unfortunately, Bangladesh is still not ready to hire a female photographer to shoot at weddings, and even if they do.. they have yet to provide access to the photographer outside the realm of the ceremonious evenings. I'm sure in time, we'll all get better at this.

Hopefully, this time it will be cooler. I will *impose* my authority, mwahaha - so I get the shots I want.

ps. Na. I bought it only over a week and it hasn't fired since. Abbu got it from Toronto and I took it to the Canon store in Dhaka yesterday. They said they can't look into it since they're not authorized to *fix* dSLR parts. =( They told me to send it back to Canada...
