Luna

Luna

This beautiful Luna moth was captive raised as part of Johann's biology curriculum in 2010. It emerged from the pupae in July and posed for us for a short while, before flying off into the evening to find romance.

I originially posted a close crop of one of the eyespots (www.flickr.com/photos/eclectic-echoes/4780035756/in/set-7...) to the Flickr group as a "Mystery" photo. Which I just recieved a correct ID comment, so I thought I would finally post this portrait.

Johann has to choose

Johann has to choose

I promised Johann I would teach him how to do simple book-binding using the Japanese Stab-binding techique after making a sketchbook for Tammy. Of course little did he kow there would be so many decisions to make along the way.
Size of the book,
type of paper inside,
number of pages,
boards of no boards,
Cover done in fabric or paper,
WHICH fabric or paper, etc...

Here he has decided the size and type of paper for the pages. He cut them down to size and has them in a temporary block. The cover boards were cut (including an inset on the face) and are gluing up under the weight of several books. Time to choose the fabric for the cover. Being in this house he has NO END of choices there. All the fabrics I have dyed, including many test swatches that are effectively fat quarters. Tammy's and my fat quarters and a whole range of fabrics from Tammy's "stash". Choice overload!

C is for Cephalopoda

C is for Cephalopoda

Yet another productive procrastination doodle. Probably my favorite class of invertebrates - Cephalopoda!

B is for Brachyuran

B is for Brachyuran

Yet another productive procrastination doodle. I would say this one was on a break, but in truthe most of the morning was a break. Got nothing accomplished that I was supposed to. Did re-read two papers that will be cited in my thesis work, and boned up on my bookbinding skills a bit, but that wasn't on the schedule, so it doesn't really count.

Truth though I do love doing these, and it gives me a chance to combine hand lettering/typeface design with drawing and a quick bit of pour out your head in as coherent a way as possible about a subject. This one took a bit longer to do than the first one. Who knows with a bit of clean up of the layout and drawings, some water colors and a nicer hand… might make something more out of this someday.

A is for - Aplacophora

A is for - Aplacophora

A bit of sketching to "unwind" after writing a good bit on Chapter 2 of my thesis tonight. Gave myself 15 minutes to sketch and write about an animal or group of animals starting with an A. First animal to pop to mind was the Aplacophorans, a class of the Mollusc phylum. I had my recent background research from the Mollusc playing cards ( sciencdecks.com) fresh in my head which definitely made it easier. Guess I need to do a blog post for Science Decks about these weird animals.

I really like the A that is in the upper left corner of the page. I might just have to make a font face based on those lines. Of course coming up with a lowercase set that matches but is legible… always a pain. Flashbacks to type design class at BSU!
