According to Wikipedia these specific jellyfish's sting is not detectable by humans... and poses minimal to no risk.

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jellyfish_Lake

Correction: The wiki does say not detectable by most human tissue.

That Wiki isn't entirely accurate. You can feel the sting just slightly on your lips and on other sensitive areas, and some people are allergic (I've seen photos of people who have ballooned up after swimming in the lake).

..well..I wouldn't dare swimming into it! Unless I was a photographer wearing a diving suit..the shot is really amazing!

    4. echeng 61 months ago | reply

Well, I was the photographer, and my "diving suit" was a pair of swim trunks. :)

What!? Wikipedia not accurate!? This is impossible!!! ;)

:) Thanks for the corrected info echeng.

As I said 8 months ago, it is indeed an incredible shot. :)

The swimmer should be perfectly fine after swimming in the lake - The Jellyfish in Jellyfish Lake, Palau, have lost their ability to use the stinging cells called nematocysts (They eat through a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae that produce food for the jellies, so they don't need to catch food with the stings, I suppose).

    15. echeng 24 months ago | reply

They do actually sting—you can feel it if one touches your lips or other sensitive areas. The sting is extremely mild; I didn't feel it anywhere else on my body. A friend of mine discovered that she was allergic to jelly stings after swimming in the lake wearing a bikini. She became really, really swollen.

That's very interesting. Is it that the nematocysts still work, but the venom in the cells is in very small quantities, do you think? Or that the venom is just majorly not harmful? I hope that your friend was all right.
