That ball is actually an art sphere by this guy:

It's a clear ball painted with the interior space of St. Peter’s Cathedral. As the sphere spins, you find yourself seeing as if "inside" the space. The outside of the sphere disappears from your vision, and all you see is the inside hemisphere. (I don't know if that makes sense. It's a weird and wonderful phenomenon.)
