Here I see the ants
and I watch as they run over each other, and the ones exiting the space under the paving slabs all carry a single piece of dirt, or pollen, or sometimes a larger pieces of flinty grit or a longer portion of twig, the size of a second hand on an analogue watch. And as they carry the dirt a few inches outside the nest, I see them place it on the ground with care and for me it fractures the ground into a million deliberately placed granules: it becomes a busy night sky luminous with a thousand million stars, their positions chosen by a God whose rationale is hidden from me. One ant tugs at the same flint for whole minutes, pushing and dragging it over the deliberately placed dirt.
