Asakusa Kannon: memories of the Edo periodAsakusa Kannon (also known as Senso-ji) is Tokyo's oldest temple, with origins dating back to AD 628. The story is that of two brothers fishing in the nearby Sumida River who caught a 2-inch golden statue in their net, threw it back into the river twice only to have the statue reappear both times. The statue was brought back to the village headman who enshrined it and eventually a hall was built for this image of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, on the spot where this temple now stands.
