eGo Cycle

eGo Cycle by Earthworm.
The little scooter that could. This baby turns out to be a real hill climber. I've got my waxed cotton rain gear on to cut the windchill factor. Top speed of 23 mph with a range of 15 miles which is about all you would want to go sitting on one. It has one lead acid battery, but you can add another (behind your feet) for longer range. Costs a little over $1,000 which makes it the best deal in decently made two wheeled transport.

How's it holding up? I had one (same color!) but I just couldn't keep it running...

Do you love it? I'm thinking of getting one and loaning my little truck to a relative that really needs a car. I can take my fiance to work when I absolutely need a car, but during the week I rarely go more than 5 miles away from the house. Do you think it's reliable enough for daily errands and trips to the grocery store?

I'll weigh in again: it really depends on your duty cycle. If you're going to ride it a lot of miles on a regular basis, or in any way "count on" it always working, then: no.

My wife and I both had 'em for about 2 years, of which about 40-50% of the time one of our bikes was broken. We both were using them fairly heavily (I was riding 8 miles/day with some hills), but they still didn't live up to the spec that was promised.

On the other hand, they're inexpensive, fun, and cute. YMMV.

I haven't had any problem with it, but then I don't use it everyday. It's a back-up for my electric car which is often being repaired.

I've been admiring these for a couple years and finally bought one a few days ago for $900 on craigslist. Within 45 seconds of my first ride it died (I think the throttle spring snapped - I hope that's all it is, anyway!) and the seller won't refund my money. Really hope I can get it working soon so I can stop paying to park at work everyday! Is yours still holding up well?

I've had one for four years. It has 10,000 miles.
I used to ride about 35 miles a day. After I got used to it, it was very reliable. You kind of get to know the sounds and feel, and learn when it needs to be torn apart, cleaned, and adjusted. Parts definitely wear out faster than in a car. Gads, it's a bicycle after all. I've replaced motor brushes, brake pads, tires, multiple times, and even one rim. Spokes break about once a year, and I used to get a flat about once a month, even with green goop and tire liners.
Now I live too far from work to ride it daily, but still enjoy it around the neighborhood, going shopping, etc.

That is really impressive n2rjt. Being able to fix your ride is a definate plus. My engineer father taught me a bit of that. I've replaced the rear inner tube and done my own work on other bicycles, but when it came to replacing the battery charger I took it to a scooter repair. Learning how to tell when it needs work is true empathy for the machine and you've shown me what it can do. I still ride it quite a bit.
