It is sad. Belfast Zoo is OK as far as Zoos go, but it is still a LOT less space than the poor things would have in the wild.

I have quite mixed feelings about zoos and safari parks. On the one hand, they do help preserve endangered species and they provide a chance for people to see animals they would never, ever, see other wise.

On the other hand, they are bit like a prison...

etrusia - I agree. I recently went to London Zoo (and I may post some images) but I found it quite despairing on some levels but, on the other hand - as you say - they do great conservation work. It's so evidently a shame for those particular individuals though which have to endure that life. A dilemma!!!
