1917 D penny
This penny was placed inside the mitre for the pocket door in my living room, behind the hardware, in 1917, the year the house was constructed.
Its value to collectors is apparently between $45-100, but it's staying with the house.

I'm open to opinions from coin-grading experts. This one is definitely in above-average condition, but there are plenty of scuffs and scratches visible and some corrosion spots.

Is this not the greatest day of your life? And you owe it all to skipping church.

Very cool story about the penny. Makes me want to leave something behind like that.
Nice macro, too, btw... I hadn't considered pics of coins, but I've got some interesting ones.

I actually just plopped it on the scanner.

Ebay auction 130197403217 has a picture of the same penny. It ends in less than a day, but it's obvious that it's your picture they are using, down to the slight dings, and mark under the B.
What are the odds?

I looked at the auction. I wonder if someone is going to get ripped off.

How in the world did you notice that?
Dystopos (52 months ago | reply)
I alerted the winning buyer.

Hi folks! I'm the sap who won the ebay auction! I'd say this coin is easily worth $60 and up. (For more on coin values, join Heritage Auction Galleries and brouse the coin auction archives - it's free.)
I originally paid $15.83 to the schmuck who grabbed your image. Thanks to you, things didn't get too far out of hand. I mailed ebay several times and was eventually able to reverse the payment. And YES, they are still allowing the seller to continue his ebay membership.
Thanks for letting me be a part of this very lucky penny. I really owe you!

Glad you didn't lose too much, Cincimatti.
Kind of weird though. The guy has a lot of positive feedback.
cincimatti (52 months ago | reply)
Unfortunately, some dishonest ebayers create more than one account. They post quick auctions, have their friends bid, or bid themselves. Once they've won, they are free to add the feedback too.
I did get my money back :-D
King Power Cinema (52 months ago | reply)
We should email other bidders and warn them.
How did you get your money back?

I pestered paypal with calls until they finally stopped payment.
I wrote the seller a couple times, and he did reply. His story is that he's a younger guy who claims to have some odds-and-end coins that were found or given to him. He tried to scan his penny, but the results weren't identifiable. To the untrained eye, this looks like an ordinary penny. He never realized he had stumbled upon a pic of an uncirclulated coin that was worth WAY more than what he probably has. You can buy these for $1 - $2 in well-circulated condition.
I got the 1917 penny in my collection in change from a Ho-Jo's off the expressway near Indianapolis in April, 2006!

Oh, and then I copied the text from Dystopos' email, stating that he owns the coin, and sent it to ebay. Ultimately they couldn't react, 'cause it was reported by a third party, not the owner, and otherwise these images are offered as "public domain". Fair enough on that one. But, one idiot missed the mark completely and wrote back, "The email you received is obviously a phishing scam..."
("Then WHY did it arrive in my ebay messages in-box, you fool?")
Dystopos (52 months ago | reply)
I don't believe that the right to reproduce the image was ever in question, as the scan does not constitute a creative work. What is at issue is using the image to commit fraud. I am not a party to that issue.

Absolutely NOT! I can only hope this whole experince has caused him to give some very serious thought to his actions, if that's indeed what he was up to.
