Mr. Gus is a Teddy Bear! One time, about 12
years ago I was down on Morris taking
pictures on a sunday afternoon and Mr. Gus
pulled up in his early 80's station wagon to
get various cans of crout and cases of
grapico from his warehouse. I approached him
and asked if I could take his picture, and
after hesitating for a minute and asking
"What would you want to take MY picture
for?" He agreed... After I snapped a
few of Gus with his standard expression, half
joking I asked if he'd smile for me-- he
made this look that I've seen on his face a
hundred times and always interpated as anger.
I said, c'mon- SMILE! and he said I AM
SMILING! That's when it hit me-- the old guy
is actually smiling all the time and everyone
just thinks he's grimmacing! I'll see if I
can find the shots and Scan and Post- I shot
them on B&W 35mm-- so it may take a
while, so many negatives, so little time...

Who's Pete?
And what are HOT DOGS?
Dystopos (76 months ago | reply)
Pete is the uncle of the current owner, who's been in charge of this little hole since 1948 (interview with Gus, owner of Pete's Famous)
If you lived in Chicago, you know what hot dogs are. There's plenty of background on Wikipedia

Is this the mean guy?
Dystopos (73 months ago | reply)
Yeah. Gus is a bit of a curmudgeon. But he has worked over a grill under a 6 foot ceiling in this little hole for 60 years. I'd be pretty cranky too.

Would you like to add this (and any other qualifiers you may have) to the First Name & Apostrophe Signage Project pool ? Cheers.

I've heard he consistantly yells at his wife. I've never been there. Maybe he has more of the Northern attitude that Southerners inerpret as rude.
Maybe he's so angry all the time that he KILLS people and disposes their bodies as hotdogs.

Whatever...his hot dogs are the best in town. His sign is way cool too.
