It's been over two decades since I last strapped on a backpack to head into the mountains for more than just a day trip and WOW has my body gotten old! But with views like this, I'm planning to stay true to my commitment to get back into backpacking again.
While on your annual Oregon summer trip where we rent a Forest Service cabin, my life-long friend Brandon Tippy, his dog Boone, and I packed into Red Mountain Lake of the Elkhorn Mountains in northeastern Oregon to find this green gem awaiting us in peaceful solitude. While there we didn't see another person or even tracks of recent visitors. The campsite we selected was right on the lake with a small babbling creek just 20 feet away. Camping doesn't get much better. There were lots of brook trout in the lake and everything we caught was around the 9-10" size. We hadn't even left before we were talking about either a future return trip or possibly hitting one of the other lakes in the area next year.
I'm really looking forward to my next trip coming up in August when I take my 8 year old son out on his first backpacking trip. .....although I might leave behind the 12 pounds of camera gear this time....Ughhhh!!!! I have to admit that I've become quite the camera snob over the years and I abhor using a point and shoot, but all the additional shots below were taken with a simple Nikon Coolpix P&S camera and many of them are not half bad.
