Windows Vista Desktop - Flip 3D by DanieVDM.
Just upgraded my PC to Windows Vista Home Premium. The transparent window title bars, task switching view etc are all part of the new Windows Aero interface - see more detail at www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/features/....

See another photo at www.flickr.com/photos/dvdmerwe/670220152/ showing the live thumbnail view on the taskbar.

Hi Rita, well the installation went fine. I did a clean install and it just moved my old Windows XP stuff to another directory (so nothing lost). Within an hour it had booted up and connected to the Internet without any problems. Only thing that is not working OK is my USB to Serial Adaptor as I am struggling to find a Vista driver for it. Also had to get updated versions on my motherboard drivers. But apart from that it is very slick and much faster on my PC (but then again my XP was mirrored over previously from one hard drive to another, and from one motherboard to another so I suspect my XP installation was a bit "confused").

Hi Rita, I would have loved to do it for you if I was there. It was my hobby a few years back, building and upgrading PC's. Well the upgrade seems complete and I have all my software running fine. Vista actually found the drivers online for the USB to Serial device (not sure where as I could not find it myself by searching).

A useful tip if you use Flock or Firefox browsers, you can use the FEBE extension that backs up all your browser settings including bookmarks, passwords, browser history, security certificates, etc. Make sit a breeze restoring your browser later.

I'll keep all your information Danie so when I find someone to help me out I'll show him/her your comments :) The desktop sure looks very pretty! I am not using Flock or Firefox anymore as on the old PC it gave me lots of problems. Haven't tried it on this PC though.

I work on Mac and PC - amazing how long it has taken Microsoft to come this close to OS X. But Vista is still too complicated and bulky/slow for my tastes...

Yes, I remember working on the Commodore Amiga which had windowed multitasking in colour and stereo sound, while the XT in those days just beeped with a green screen..... Most of MS's "innovations" came from other companies, just like MS's first DOS system. Vista is dramatically faster on this machine of mine though, largely also because of the clean install - then again it is a Core 2 Duo CPU with dual channel RAM and a Vista compatible video card...... nothing like driving the hardware industry along!

I have hit two Vista bugs already:
1. Application would freeze when deleting a file (would say calculating space) - it was a known error which I solved by disabling the drive indexing feature.
2. Latest bug was it stopped selecting multiple files for action in explorer file window - only work around I could find was atforums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?Po stID=981031&....
3. Started reporting my boot drive's volume bitmap is incorrect every bootup. The drive is a few months old only. Trying to find resolution. Just takes longer to boot, but nothing lost yet. July 07 - seems to have come right after two weeks or so. Not sure what solved it in the end. No more problems with this.
4. Picasa been freezing since end of June when geotagging in Google Earth. Has been persisting solidly for last 2 weeks. I am trying a newer release of Picasa.
5. Windows Update stopped working for more than a month - eventually found a "fix" at windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgro ups/en-us/de....

Hi DanieVDM,

Wow... very sexy Vista shot! This could be part of a Microsoft ad campaign. :)

Anyway, thanks for creative-commons-ing it so that we can use it (the photo will be in an article about Windows Vista on wikinvest--it's kind of like wikipedia, but for investing). If you're curious/have any suggestions to picture thumbnailing etc/accreditation, you can take a look at it at here.

Thanks again for the photo!

Pleasure tres_jane, but not part of any MS campaign. I'll be loading Linux at work soon so that will probably also get a screenshot ;-)

Note I have replaced the photo as I realised the desktop background I was using was from my Flicker Favourites and an "All Rights Reserved" photo was being used. The background is now one of my own photos.

...nice to see MS haven't lost the interminable "Please Wait" message when it shuts down. I like this as it gives me time for internal reflection, like; how have they got away with this for so long?? bloated and clunky, they'll probably get it about right on the 6th iteration just before they release the next (incompatible) OS...and so it goes....

So it looks like Windows 7 will ultimately "replace" Vista. Its public beta came out yesterday and reports so far are very positive.
