Former Elder-Beerman At Woodville Mall

Former Elder-Beerman At Woodville Mall

The former and now abandoned Elder-Beerman department store at the Woodville Mall in Northwood, Ohio.

There are no words to describe how disturbingly creepy and wrong this mall is. Two anchor stores left, The Andersons General Store and a Sears, and neither have mall entrances anymore. A theater and about a dozen or so stores left inside, and Deb is the only one that is a national chain (there is space for around 100 stores). The third anchor (Elder-Beerman) and its wing are roped off and have been closed so long that they are decaying. Half the lights weren't on, there was no heat (it was quite chilly inside), there were buckets collecting water leaking through the roof, and the whole mall smelled of mold.

***The Woodville Mall was ordered closed by a Wood County, Ohio, judge on Dec. 16, 2011, after an inspection by city and county officials found mold, mildew, no heat, buckling floor tiles, fallen ceiling tiles, an inoperable sprinkler system, and partially collapsed roof in the back of the former Lane Bryant store. This closure does not affect The Andersons or Sears.***

Abandoned Toledo Mall

Abandoned Toledo Mall

North Towne Square Mall
Toledo, Ohio

An abandoned mall on the north side of Toledo, Ohio, the North Towne Square Mall was opened in 1980, as the last of the Toledo areas four malls to open. It was anchored by a LaSalle’s and a Lion Store, both Toledo-based department store chains, and a Montgomery Ward. Eventually all three anchors would close and remain empty- LaSalle’s closed as an Elder-Beerman in 1997, Montgomery Ward closed in 2000 after the company's bankruptcy, and Lion Store closed as a Dillard’s in 2002. The mall itself closed for good in 2005, largely due to the nearby Westfield Franklin Park Mall, but also because of chaining demographics in Toledo, the lack of any anchor stores, and the national trend to move away from enclosed malls. Today, only the old Montgomery Ward store remains open as the Super Fitness Center (it has no entrance to the mall), and the city of Toledo is in the works to buy the property from its out-of-state owners and begin demolition on the mall in 2012.
