One thing you're all forgetting is that being around the Lego community for a while; peoiple get to know you. Attending conventions, you meet even more people outside your area, and especially people you'd only normally see online. The great thing about the Lego community is that people are so generous; mostly. My tip for you is: stick around for a while. Get involved, and talk to people. Participate in contests and other online forums. And join a local LUG or even start your own! You'll be getting free stuff before you know it!

Okay, so just to clarify how I got these (despite not being at BrickWorld) and their freeness, Nannan bought and received a bunch of stuff while he was at BrickWorld, which he then sent to me last week to review (since my minifig collection is more extensive than his). I'm just borrowing all this stuff, and will need to return the whole lot of it to Nannan once I'm done. :-)

That's not entirely true. While yes, there are many of the more popular conventions here in the states; there are several smaller ones throughout Europe. I don't think they've done it in a good 2 years, but 1000steine-Land had a convention back in 2006. I know there's also one in Spain and various other countries I'm sure. I don't keep up with too many European sites but something like Eurobricks.com might be a good place to start.

If nothing exists already, why don't you start your own convention?
