Money Talks / What You Do For Money, Honey

Welcome to India. Shrouded behind all the recent buzz about this country
being the IT Hub, the outsourcing centre, a flowing economy blah blah blah,
lies the dark fact that might never let us progress: Politics and the
Corruption that comes along with it. A packaged deal.
Wanna earn money? Work for the government, then don't get people's work done
till the slip you some dosh. Or even better, become a politician, and feed
off the tax payers' money.
You want to reconstruct your building? 50% of the money you get is spent in
bribes.
You want to get a passport made? Yeah, you need to pay off the police.
You want to be rich? Let the tax officer share a part of your riches.
You just broke a traffic signal and don't want to go to court? Slip the
traffic cop a twenty.
You want to do something illegal without any hitches? Hand over a fat part
of the earnings to the local politico and he should take care of it.
You want a seat in a college? Pay off the bloody principal whose fat arse is
rested behind the desk, mouth drooling for greenbacks.
With so much money flowing into the wrong hands, there doesn't seem a chance
for this country.

    Wow, Dhruv..I knew about some of what you describe, but had no
    idea it was that bad. Of course, we don't get much "unspun" news here, so there is little chance of finding out. Nice picture. Love the colors.

    Sometimes it takes people, and nations as a whole even, completly hitting the bottom before they can bounce back to the top.
    We'll see what happens when they themselves get sick of the lives they're living.

    @wildcardpoet
    i have been here since birth :)
    so i am used to the system...

    @Matt, Elizabeth
    yeah, we've gotta work this out as a country, but it seems near impossible to hit the bottom with the booming economy. sad part is, that the more the economy booms, the more money flows into the governement's coffers, and the more chances the politicians get to get their greedy hands on the money...

    I know so many people from India who have told me this same unfortunate story. Plus, I could see a little bit of it first hand in my visits there. I wish there was an answer, because I agree with you about how the corruption has become such a way of life that it's the only way things get done.
    Brilliant photo.....,and despite everything, your country still pulls me like a magnet.

    @chalkdog
    i like your last line, and it rings true for everyone staying here too..
    there's something about this country that all the corruption and craziness cannot stop from making one love it!
    glad you like this place!

  23. tomhide (61 months ago | reply)

    So much story in the image alone. Very nicely taken.
    The corruption may be more so obvious there in Inida but this sorta things happens everywhere around the globe... just more discreet $_$

    Es triste que sea así lo que cuentas. El ángulo, el color de la foto y el fondo negro te han quedado muy cinematográficos. Me gusta.

    corruption run amok. seems to exist where ever one looks if they are willing to open their eyes. wicked photo.

  27. lilgreentreefrog1 (60 months ago | reply)

    great pic- sad about the entrenched corruption but it does go on everywhere...maybe at least in india where the corruption is more open it is at least honest ;) if you get my meaning :) And as chalkdog says the place still pulls. Which Indian isn't proud to eb indian and which visitor doesn't leave with a tiny part of india in their heart

    I know your pic is about India but it reminds me of bail in the US. the rich use bail to get out, the poor have to serve the time.
