A Leather Valise by hexodus...

A Leather Valise

The one thing that I took with me when I left Montreal was this leather valise, which had belonged to my grandfather. An inscription inside indicates that it had been given to him on September 19, 1953 - his birthday, and not long after he had emigrated to Canada after leaving Europe.

While in good condition overall, one of the seams on the sides does need to be replaced. I am not sure who to take it to, so if anyone knows a place in LA that is good at repairing leather goods, please advise.

It was made by J E Fournier in Montreal.

Masterly Application of Colors by hexodus...

Masterly Application of Colors

Yves is showing me the originals of Zanis Waldheims' geometric art. This short video should give an idea of the size and form of these pieces - something that one might not get by looking at them on the Internet.

I have a number of other videos like this, but they need a little editing in order to make them fit for presentation(or to make them even fit on Flickr). Yves does a good job explaining the concepts of each one.

Sculptural Experimentations by hexodus...

Sculptural Experimentations

Yves and my grandfather made sculptures based upon the paintings done by my grandfather. Shown here is one made of plaster, and it is an extrusion of the piece on the lower left hand of the page.

One of the ideas in making the 3D objects was to reveal the shapes that appeared when the concept gained depth. In a certain sense it reveals the complexity embedded in what appears to be a straightforward shape when viewed from above.

I saw only a couple of these sculptures at Yves' house and I thought they would be amazing scaled up to human size, done in stone, wood or concrete.

An Exhibition by hexodus...

An Exhibition

Yves and I spent a few hours one afternoon looking at the art that my grandfather had made. Although it is possible to get a sense of these pieces online, it was a different experience seeing them in person.

First of all, they are large...maybe about 3 feet. When viewed at full size they really have the intended impact, and after looking at this collection when I closed my eyes I would see the lines, shapes and colors.

In a few weeks I will have a chance to post a video of Yves showing and describing some of the best pieces. Please, stay tuned.

Yves Jeanson on Abstraction in the Work of Z. Waldheims by hexodus...

Yves Jeanson on Abstraction in the Work of Z. Waldheims

Yves Jeanson discusses the moment of geometric abstraction in arts: Kandinsky, Mondrian, Vasarely, etc. and the theoretical insights that they brought to the field, which Zanis Waldheims took even further - attempting to create a bridge between image and word.

I like this video because Yves expresses his enthusiasm for my grandfather's art and his desire to bring some attention to his ideas.

Behind him is part of the large collection of books, documents and drawings that Zanis Waldheims left in Yves' capable hands.

Note: This video cuts off at 1:30, but you can watch the full 4-minute version on Vimeo!
