Decided to go back and shoot this barn again....Probably will shoot it several more times under various conditions too...I liked the more foggy atmosphere here...

Springtime in the Columbia Gorge provides an amazing display of various shades of Green. I took my niece up hiking last weekend who was visiting from Illinois and she had a great time. We just did a short 6.6 miles along the Eagle Creek Trail and this is of course one of the more popular spots I thought she would like to see!

As most of you know I rented the Tokina 16-28 2.8 lens for a few weeks. I thought I would tell you a few things I liked about it and a few things I did not like about it... Ill start off with the good. It's tack sharp at F/11, it focuses nicely, there is almost no CA, or distortion with the lens. These are the good and all the good things I could find with it.

What I did not like about the lens. I rented the lens primarily as a night photography lens, since it has the big bubble glass in front it takes no filters. I figured the reviews I had read about it being as sharp at the Nikon 14-24 at half the cost was all good..Not so much. F/2.8 is not sharp, not at all, at least on this copy of the lens. The only tack sharp F stop was 11, all others were soft compared to what the reviews said. I actually took my 17-40 out of my bag while I was using this so I would be forced to use it and not default back. Getting back to the star photography. F/2.8 not being sharp so no light gained here. Toggling back and forth between auto and manual focus was not very easy, Tokina has a clutch system and I found that once I focused on something and wanted to switch to manual I had to pull back the clutch. Well in doing this the focus moved a bit and that little bit was enough to give me blurry images. I am much happier with the switch on the canon and nikon lenses.

For landscape photography its a great wide angle lens if you wish to shoot at F/11 all the time. It's nice and sharp right out of the camera. One thing I missed the most was using filters. I like using my filters in field to get the image how I like it in the camera before bringing it back into photoshop and finalizing it. During the day I could not shoot long exposures, I could not use GND's and that was a bummer because it made more work on the computer.

The lens is big, but not too big. For me it was easy to carry around all day and not worry about weight....some people may be put off by the size of the lens if they are gonna use it all day.

All in all did I like the lens? It was good for a few things when the light was perfect and I wasn't shooing the sky as a primary part of my shot.
Would I ever buy this lens? No, it's not for me. I would rather pay the extra money for a 16-35 that I can use filters on and have the ease of switching to and from MF to AF if I were to upgrade from my 17-40. So for now, I am going back to my 17-40 and I have rented the 24-105 that will be arriving on Thursday.

Hope you all had a fantastic weekend!
