Glasswing - Greta oto

Butterflies have colorful wings due to a mosaic of scales on their wings. The Glasswing butterfly of Central America has areas of its wings that are devoid of scales and thus have no color in some wing areas.

This image was made at the Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory and Gardens in South Deerfield, Massachusetts near the University of Massachusetts where I graduated as an entomology (insect) major many years ago. I am no longer in that field but have always had a fondness for nature.
