Rare Tree Octopus

the eyes! THE EYES!!
Rare Tree Octopus by Dru!.
I was lucky enough today to catch a glimpse of an elusive Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus (Octopus paxarbolis). I have been trying to see one of these rare creatures for several years and with great patience managed to sight one migrating from tree to tree that was unaware of my presence and had not camouflaged itself.

There is some info about these creatures at zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/
but it is somewhat inaccurate. The PTO (Pacific Tree Octopus) is not only found near Puget Sound (as alleged on Zapatopi) but is also found along the western coast of BC as far north as Bella Coola. The Canadian population has not been critically endangered in the same way the American one has, although the PTO is red-listed in BC because of its dependence on undisturbed pathways from its aquatic spawning grounds and its forested habitat.

Wow! I've only heard about these guys. Apparently not usually seen this early (before April). Nice shot.

Did you use a telephoto lens or did you actually manage to sneak up close enough with a normal lens? That's amazing. You are one lucky punk... so good.

Is this the deadly venomous PTO or the benign garden variety?

The desert southwest variant has been known to have been largely responsible for the decimation of the jackalope populations.

This is not possible! Not! Never heard of those little creatures before... Looks like a plastic toy on a pine tree. I though it is a joke at first.
Is it? April the first? ;)

Uzhik... looking like a rubber toy is one of the means by which these elusive creatures camouflage themselves!

Those eyes are just wild...almost spooky. I could only imagine the fuss created if it were to crawl in a backpacker's sleeping bag.

I like the painted eyes!!! :0))
I have a farm of those. I must protect them from the Sasquatch. This spoiler only eats the heads!

I sell them $100 USD a piece!! Good for tree octopus soup!! :0)) I can sell the legs only at $15 USD for 2.

Too Many Canyons raises an interesting ethical dilemma. What should we do in light of the fact that the endangered Tree Octopus is preying on the equally endangered Jackalope population? Maybe we could start a Tasers for Jackalopes fund?

Hey. Careful. Those things are dangerous! My cousin was lured into a nasty 20-year legal contract by one of these ink-squirting demons. (Yes, they look so innocent, don't they?) He had to employ the services of a Cuban voodoo lawyer-surgeon to escape - it cost him thousands of dollars and 3 limbs.
