Miles of files

Miles of files by drpritch.
Welcome to the archives of the city of Toronto. It's quite a space: this aisle is only about 10% of the collection. Memories of the X Files, or the closing scene from Indiana Jones.

My group is doing a retrospective on the Spadina LRT project - looking at arguments and predictions before construction (1987), during construction (1992-1997) and later. It's funny how similar the debate is to the St. Clair right-of-way: Steve Munro was a big supporter, Save our Spadina were the opponents, John Sewell tried to have it both ways...

That's interesting about the retrospective work; is your finished work a written paper that can be distributed? I'm working to fight the twinning of the Port Mann bridge and expansion of Highway 1 here in Vancouver, so your work is suddenly of even greater interest.

It's probably not very analogous to the Port Mann project - the impacts are more like the Canada Line, but on a smaller scale: disruptions to retailers (bankruptcies) during construction, possibly some new, dense development along the line.

There are plenty of studies and books that more closely parallel the Port Mann situation - I'd be happy to point you that way, if you're interested.

That looks like a good spot to "waste" a day!

That is an amazing photograph. How did you get up so high - is there a balcony halfway up the wall?

Are the boxes stacked more than two-deep?

There must be some powerful fire suppressing systems in there. Not water, presumably, but I can't imagine foam would be too good either. A giant flood of CO2, everyone run for your gas mask?

The public can't go into that room - they use forklifts and weird mechanical platforms to access the files. They just had one well-positioned viewing platform where I could see the actual files.

I think they're just two deep. There were a few sections filled with thin flat boxes, which made it look a bit more like an Ikea warehouse.
