Signs

Signs by drp.
My first week of commuting/working in NYC I almost gave up. I hated it. I told myself I wasn't good enough, that I shouldn't be here, that they made a mistake in hiring me.

Every morning though, I saw this one woman - in the subway, sitting on a bench at the station, walking slowly down the escalator, resting at a table in the café.

She was easily 8-9 months pregnant. Each time she appeared emotionally and physically drained, breathing heavy and holding the bowling ball growing in her stomach. Despite that, she was always impeccably dressed, neat and sharp, whether reading a book or stopping to get a few moment's rest at a doorway.

It's because of her that I didn't give up. I took seeing her over and over again at different times of the day as an omen. I thought to myself "this is a sign." Her presence was to show me that new beginnings are to be cherished, and that potential for something good and beautiful in life is all around us. Embrace it.

I have not seen her for a few weeks now, so I assume she has given birth to her child and is enjoying a well deserved rest and quality time with her new baby. When I do see her again, if at all, I am going to tell her what it meant to me to see her, and maybe buy her something soothing to drink.

People should know how they make a difference in your life, however small.

Love the story...and yes, we never know who is watching...what they see. Seems like you were really looking for anything/anyone to help you make it through the week. That's good...why? Because you believe in yourself. I hope you know that whether you stay in this job or decide something else suits better, that your work speaks for itself. It's on the edge...it makes me think. Sooner or later, you'll find that place you know is right.

Duane, this is an amazing story, one of my favorite this year. Yes, motherhood is intense. After 3 years of solo at home motherhood my wife is ready to go back to work. She is steadfast and I have an amazing appreciation for motherhood because of her. Great Story and Inspiration.

those are beautiful words and it is so, so true about the differences other human beings can make to your life. yesterday an 84 year old lady (yes, she told me her age and proudly - which i loved) and i struck up a conversation and she made some marvellous observations about age and 'mucking up'. she was wonderful. we parted, hoping to pass by each other again one day.

Really nicely done, Duane. And you are right, as you said, "People should know how they make a difference in your life, however small." I think many at Flickr would agree with me that you have done exactly that here. You have made a difference in people's lives, by taking the time and reaching out to so many of us with so much kindness, thoughtfulness, generosity and your great sense of humor. I know it has meant a lot to me, and I thank you for it.

And that is a positive mind creating a positive attitude towards life!

From "the life of Brian" : 'Always look on the bright side of life, tadum, tadum, tadum, tadum, tadum...'

Indeed, share the differences made. We don't do it often enough.

Another one: when you feel down, force a smile on your face (for some time) and feel the change in your body and mind.

Like the photo. The handle on the side hints at how you clung onto the thought of the pregnant lady and used it to pull you through. The typical babies wide eyed stare where they are drinking in all the new wonders around them reflects your, and many other photographers/artists, way of looking around them all the time. Intoxicating!
Glad things are on the up for you.

Striking how others effect us. I remember an experience in WalMart one time. I was grumpy and in a hurry to get through the checkout. The woman infront of me had a lot of stuff and I had only one item. She very kindly offered to let me go ahead of her when she saw I had only one item. And then I noticed she had only one arm, with a prosthesis for the other. And a child with her as well! Here was a woman who was happily coping with the world with difficulties I could only imagine and still was gracious to strangers! I stopped being grumpy.

Great to hear from you Duane!
