The Cheetos Bandit

The Cheetos Bandit by drp.
On our last visit to Kentucky, Jolene and I were visited by a family of raccoons at our cabin in Otter Creek. We were hanging out, talking and drinking on the back deck, when we heard a rustling in the brush. Out popped one head, then two, and another.

We didn't have much in the way of food at that point, so we threw a few Cheetos snacks down and they gobbled them up in short order. They hopped up on the deck, then the picnic table, and had a ball. Cheetos must be the raccoon equivalent of crack because they couldn't get enough.

This one fellow would lunge for his snack, and then chatter away at us if another wasn't put down in its place. At one point he jumped down onto the deck and went after Jolene's toes! She quick-handedly grabbed a broom and brushed the little junk food bandit aside, all the while doing a hop step that would make that "River Dance" guy proud.

We dubbed her "Jolene The Broom-Wielding Raccoon Slayer."

Why they say "Please do not feed the animals." But then you wouldn't have this shot.

When I lived in Kinnelon, NJ the step-dad was a big shot for a furnishing company. One of his truck drivers had found a baby raccoon on the road. The baby raccoon was standing by its mother who had been run over. Since the truck driver knew our family and knew I loved animals...he gave the baby to us. We took it to the vet and had the whole rabies stuff taken care of and found out how to feed it and take care of it. We had a "pet" raccoon for about six months. My step-mom named her Sambah.

My dog (a black female lab) treated it like it was one of hers. The two were inspearable. When I walked my dog the raccoon would follow. She'd go out in the woods, check things out and then run right back and find us.

People would pass and say "There's a raccoon following you."

"Yup, she's mine."

Once she got big, we safely set her out in the wild. Now whenever my step-mom sees a raccoon - she swears it's Sambah.

PS Sambah would love to get into my snack drawer in the kitchen. I never was a Cheetos fan. I helped her get addicted to Vanilla Wafers though.

Great pic!

Just more proof that raccoons can live on toxic waste. Cute shot. We've got one that's just started showing up. Mary Anne thinks it might be a pregnant female. That would be cool. I think. Have a good weekend, Duane.

Great shot! Perhaps the equivalent to raccoons here in Oz are possums. Though, I've not experienced them being so bold, I'm not sure it is in there nature. They just make a lot of noise and set up home in your ceiling. (Ditto what alex craig and vinathegreat and sizeofguam said... there's a cheeto's addiction pandemic!)

I think animals must like fatty, carb-y snacks ... I know my cat goes nuts anytime I have a bag of chips or crackers, and will even try to stick her head into it to get some! :-)
