Frankly I think these caterpillars are rather gross. They seemed very hungry.

They're caterpillars of the cinnabar moth. Quite harmless, unless you eat them.

Gawd we are gonna get a moth invasion next... thanks for telling Roger. I think these need keeping on a lead Lemon2.... there are two weeds in our garden completely covered with them. Much as they disgust me, I can't get rid of them. Maybe I'll be more vigilant over weeding in future.

They're usually found on ragwort - clusters of yellow daisy flowers, with shaggy leaves.

The moths are quite harmless - pretty little red and black jobs.
