The AC-47 was SPOOKY. The SPECTRE Gunships were the AC-130s. This aircraft also made a showing at the Thunder In The Desert airshow at Luke Air Force Base.

There was a third gunship used in Vietnam. That was the AC-119 Shadow. The order of introduction was the AC-47 Spooky, then the AC-130 Spectre, and then the AC-119 Shadow. There was a fourth gunship that saw operation as part of a concept development using the C-123 redesignated as AC-123K. Only two were introduced, but they wreaked havoc on hundreds of Vietcong trucks, personnel, and boats operating in or near the Ho Chi Min trail and Mekong River. The project was call Black Spot.

AC-47 Spooky (or Puff, The Magic Dragon) was the first fixed wing gunship successfully deployed in Southeast Asia. There were two versions of the AC-119, the AC-119G (two recip engines) was Shadow, the AC-119K (two recip engines and two jet pods)was Stinger.
