2nd Night of Chanukah (20071205-171237-PJG)It is customary to have an additional candle (the shamash) with which to light the other candles and in order to use its light. The shamash should be placed in a way that shows it is not one of the Chanukah candles.

"Chanukah is an eight day holiday which begins on the 25th day of the month of Kislev. It marks the miraculous victory of the Jews, led by the Maccabees, against Greek persecution and religious oppression. In addition to being victorious in war, another miracle occurred: When the Maccabees came to rededicate the Temple, they found only one flask of oil with which to light the Menorah. This small flask lasted for eight days. In order to commemorate this miracle, we light a Menorah for the eight days of Chanukah. This year (5768 / 2007-2008) Chanukah begins at nightfall of December 4, 2007, and ends on December 12, 2007. On the evening before each one of the days, the corresponding number of Chanukah candles are lit." The first candle is placed on the extreme right of the Menorah. On the second night, a candle is added to the left of the first one. The newest candle is lit first, using the shamash, and then the next one to the right, etc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- May the warm glow of the Chanukah candles bring you warmth, comfort, and peace throughout the year. Happy Chanukah! Wishing You and Yours all the very best for your own Holiday Season, and the coming New Year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please view Large On Black for greater detail. I will be out of town for a a day or so. I may resume from the night that I am back. CommentsAllieW (busy)
