the only thing that annoyed me when i was going through the spec of the airport (extreme or otherwise) is the lack of browser-based admin interface. it seems "de rigeur" for every other networked appliance, so why not here?

I guess Apple figure they can do a better job of it with desktop client software. Going by the standard of the web interfaces these things typically carry, I think in this case they've done a much better job.

Agreed, it ties you to having a Mac or Windows machine around to configure it (so no good if you're running a linux-only network) and a really good web interface would probably be preferable in that regard. Thing is, the desktop software works so well that I'm more than happy to sacrifice that.

Have you tried mounting a hard disc on it Drew? I'm feeling rather constrained by my MacBook Pro being forever tied to the desk at home due to the Firewire disc on which my music is all stored. I'm starting to ponder a second hand Mac Mini to run as a Media Server, but there's potential that a new router could do the job too…

Any experience?

I've not tried that yet, but I'll give it a go and report back.
