"Suspicious Activity?"

Nothing suspicious to report here, mein Kommandant.
People seem so small next to elephants. :)
Stupid elephants. Can't they read that this lane is CLOSED!
With a face like this, you too can sit on the civil rights of enemy mole photographers before they create "live nude elephant porn" and destroy humanity.
these two are holding on, trunk to tail, like a group of kindergarteners crossing the street. so sweet.
"Suspicious Activity?" by drewbic.
A one handed, "Hail Mary" , "award winning" (ha!) slightly shaky shot reaching over a wall was all I was able to get of the elephants from Barnum & Bailey circus entering the Midtown Tunnel, after standing around in the cold with a crowd of people for two hours. There were twice as many cops from the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel department as there were spectators, hassling everyone because there are "restrictions against photographing the tunnel." Apparently TOLL BOOTH operations are a matter of national security. Even though the MTA statutes clearly state that photography is permissable, and even though the battle has been fought and won in court, those with badges continue to hassle those with cameras. I was informed by one officer that I was standing on "private property." I looked down at the sidewalk, up at the street sign reading "51st Ave " and responded that I did not realize that New York City sidewalks were private. The officer then said, "Don't you sass me!" , to which I replied, "I'm merely stating the facts." I have to say, it really took all the fun out of the whole enterprise. There are few things more frustrating than over-authorized, armed, under-informed guardians of the public enforcing statutes they do not know under the premise of "national security." We're talking about a parade here people.

oooOOOOOoo. Amazing capture even if The Man was trying to police against art.
I was on the other side of this tunnel and we had same copper attitude. Lots of barricades and one guy all hopped up about a parking lot exit (we all moved for the one car that tried to exit)...yelling, barricading..and then ten minutes later the parking lot closed it's gate.
You really got to watch out for those Pachyderm fans.

The links you posted only involve MTA New York City Transit, aka the subways. While photographers/transit buffs like myself have fought and won the battles to take pictures in the subway, LIRR and Metro-North, MTA Bridges and Tunnels have their own set of rules, and there are signs posted at every MTA bridge and tunnel crossing that photography is prohibited. That said, for the cops to bust people's balls during an event like this is just stupid.

brilliant capture!

i was in the same location as R.bean on the west side of the tunnel, and the funniest/not-so-funny moment came when the elephants just came into view...Just then the NYPD parked their double long van right in front of the people they were hazing earlier about the busy parking intersection (1/2 car per hour activity)...protect and serve...protecting us from a view of the elephants I suppose.

keep up the good photo work.

I've been thinking of starting a photo series called "No Pictures," which would consist of attempts to photograph all the people who, for reasons good and bad, tell us not to take pictures. Could be hard to get anything good out of it, but doing it would have its pleasures.

By the way, very nice picture here. And I'm glad for the description and the other comments on legal matters.

We were looking for pictures of 'The Wall' and your picture was on the first page of that Flickr search. LMAO! I had to click on it to verify the pic was legit. My husband use to escort wide/super loads across bridges. They have to register with the Port Authority and then wait until NYC Police close down a level on the bridge at midnight to all other traffic, and then all the heavy/wide or high loads go across with the police/esorts. I was trying to find a NYC pic; but pic of loads at night don't come out well...here's a heavy load transfering weight evenly over a bridge in PA. flickr.com/photos/lessaweaver/245853694/in/se t-7215759428... Have to admit, your wide load picture is better!

here in Bogotá (Colombia) it was not allowed to take pictures in the public transportation system (you know, the risk of attacks and all that paranoia) so what we did was to call in the PEOPLE via Flickr to take pictures, everyone at the same time
here the results

www.flickr.com/search/?q=transmifoto&s=re c
www.flickr.com/photos/61171803@N00/

and the fact that now IT IS allowed to take pictures
it works, doesn't it

Oooooh yeah! I heard about this on NPR. The Barnum and Bailey circus train comes into NYC with all the animals, but the train station has no way of unloading the elephants, so they have to let the elephants off somewhere outside downtown and the walk all the way to Madison Square Garden really late at night! It's really interesting.
