Thanks Fuyanyu.
Yes, you really get exercise if you dial long distance. You can't do redial though if it is busy...
I like the feel and look of it though.

i think the new phones don't have any durability.

Thanks Saseki. Yes, it is nice and heavy. I think they put a weight inside to make it seem more sturdy (like what they did with the old Apple IIs).
I imagine it will last longer than me.
On the other hand, I do enjoy my cordless phone too. I suppose talking on the phone was much more precious then -- before we wouold multitask. My grandmother told me about their shared phone line when she had this. Now, I see people wrapped up talking on their cell phones everywhere. Most seem oblivious to where they are at the moment.
..Forgive the rant. : )

No "Q" or "Z" on the dial. Collector's item!

Thanks C. I think Western Electric had a near monopoly on these, so it is not so rare. Mine needs a good cleaning too since it has been well used. My family always loved to talk.

In the US at least, phone numbers used to be explained as a combination of letters and numbers.
I'm not sure about why they had a combination. Part of it might have been to explain to operators when you dialed long distance. I think people thought letters might be easier to remember or to explain. For example, there is an old song called "PEnnsylvania 6-5000." That was for the number PE=72(6-5000).
You don't need the letters on the phone. This phone still works, although it is a pain to dial long numbers, especially if you have to redial. The sound is better than other phones in the house.
