Ah, the famous mandorlato*/torrone! I didn't get to overhear the story being told so I was just confused when I saw it ;-)

*first time I saw a humongous chunk of this, rather than small bars, I was in Italy and they called it mandorlato it was made by my friend's family too, so the first thing that pops on my head is Mandorlato rather than the more known Torrone. It was smaller than this...and it only took me 6 months to finish.

weird to me at least. never seen one before. hacking at it to break off pieces were just about impossible too. but once we got pieces off, pretty good.

to me the large chunks are definitely weird. I had seen it before as a kid, but they always come in small, easy to break off, bars. This thing on the other hand...is probably nearly impossible to break without a hammer and a chisel.
