• The grinded part. It was a very amateur job as I don't have all the tools needed. But in the end I'm pleased with the result.

28mm Conversion

Today's afternoon was spent converting this pre-AI 28mm f3.5 lens from Nikon. This will allow me to use the lens in my film cameras beside the Nikormat FTn. Also it now can be used as a "normal" lens in the D80 with manual metering. It will be a perfect companion to the AI 105 Micro... Next I'll grind a bit more to avoid damaging the AI-index prong in the camera (7h if you look into the camera)

As anyone tried this kind of conversion?

Dude! I have this lens! I thought I was the only one, but apparently not. Mine looks like it was factory converted to AI a long long time ago, but it's still a pre-AI lens. I use it on my D40x as a slow (but razor sharp) normal lens (I have some trouble focusing with it though, it's kinda picky) and on my n65 and n6006 as a wide angle (it meters on the n65). I love that it can use 52mm filters. Very very handy.

I need an adapter so I can use this on my Minoltas. The 28mm Vivitar just isn't in the same league.

    Mine's serial number 638109

Wow! I know this lens is from the 60s, and I do love it a lot when I shoot chrome. Now I'll do some test with digital to see how it works. I agree with you in the focus "problem", but the truth is that with this lens one has so depth of field at f11 that it doesn't get in the way...

Do you have photos taken with this lens?

I sure do, but they're all film so far. Here, I'll put a couple here:

Thank you! They are great! Your's is in better shape than mine. (And the Pro conversion is much metter than mine.) I still have to put the small ridge on the left of mount point. I think I'll do it with some sort of epoxy.

Also I've uploaded it's first shot in the D80 where it has a fov of 42mm...

    Thank you!

You're welcome! Mine probably isn't, the glass has a big scratch right across it. Of course, I've determined that scratches mean nothing in the real world... I took lots of pictures to determine it was razor sharp before even noticing the scratch. It does make it difficult to use in weird lighting conditions (bad flaring crap), but it doesn't bother me any.

It's a good little lens! Sometimes I put it on my D40x when I want to take it in places where it can get banged around. I've broken my 18-55 twice on the mount and once on the zoom ring because the plastic inside doesn't deal well with banging around (I have a great warranty - such things are important when you're sixteen) but I'm always confident that I can carry this lens where I feel like without any harm happening to it.

I actually bought it from a guy I met on Flickr a month or two ago.
