Not a good day...

Well...I guess it looks like it probably ended pretty well. Pilot must have done one helluva a job not tearing her apart.

It seems to have been floating for a while, I think at least 15 minutes. So I hope all get out of it in time, as it seems to be sinking.

Again, I don't know who to credit for this picture, it is definitely NOT taken by me. 2009 has just begun, but these will be some of the photos of the year, 2009, I am sure.

Don't know where this is originally from:

There are quite a few passenger ferry boats that transit the Hudson river. From early reports the first ferry boat was on scene shortly after the aircraft ditched and started pulling the passengers off of the wings and out of the water. There were at least four or five ferry boats at the site before the first fire/rescue boats arrived.

A passenger who was on one of the ferry boats that took part in the rescue stated that he ferry he was on arrived in about two minutes after the airliner ditched in the river.

NYC police now report that all passengers have been rescued with no serious injuries. Divers have gone into the cabin to assure that all persons have been rescued.

Numerous reports from various sources all state that the ditching was caused by bird strikes causing the failure of one engine and then shortly the second engine failed.

No matter the cause, an excellent job of ditching by the crew, also an excellent job by the cabin crew in the evacuation. Superb response by the local ferry boats should be noted as well.

Again, no reports at this time of any serious or critical injuries. Let us hope that stays true.

Except that it is from pprune.org forums ...

Lost both engines shortly after take-off due to bird strike @ 3200 ft. Was aiming for small general aviation airport, but couldn't make it. Good job ditching it in the river. I've gotten about a dozen phone calls so far - I work for US Airways .

Yeah, I can imagine you do! I saw the flight tracking screenshot, where you can see it seems they were lining up. As they apparently reached 3200 feet before descending again, they almost made it in. But it could have gone a lot worse ...

The pilots must have done a brilliant job to get that down in one piece... and perhaps this bodes well, too, for Airbus' airframe construction. It appears though as if the passengers did not all read their safety leaflets... very few of them are wearing lifejackets!

I got up now, so I check this news now,
this news was flashed onto the television screen immediately in Japan.....
I remembered BA B777 encountered bird strike in LHR for her landing, both engines failed....
Many Bird Strikes happen in Narita, too.

(Revised this comment at 09/01/17)
Sorry,I made misunderstanding for BA 777 both engines failed at 08/01/17 ...not due to bird strike, as DitB Said ...

It is hard to say this early, but it SEEMS they hit some birds in BOTH engines. If just one engine had been running, they should not have lost any altitude - that is the main reason for having more than one engine. These events are rare, but it happened to the British Airways Boeing 777 in Heathrow as well, where they crashed short of the runway (but not because of birds). A Ryanair aircraft lost both engines on take-off in Italy as well, in 2008. If they lose both engines at just 3200 feet, they will not have more than a few minutes, as you can see on the Flight Aware data:

03:27PM 40.86 -73.88 194 3200
03:28PM 40.88 -73.9 202 2000
03:28PM 40.86 -73.93 215 1600
03:29PM 40.83 -73.95 194 1200
03:29PM 40.82 -73.97 191 1300
03:30PM 40.78 -74 189 400
03:31PM 40.75 -74.02 153 300

They would have been quite surprised, and busy. In hindsight, I am sure some armchair pilot could say "Why didn't they just ...." but at this stage, I tend to believe they did all they possibly could. For further speculation, let's just be happy that all (seemingly?) made it out alive, and wait for the report ...

Also, there are at least TWO pilots on board, and this is a team effort. So we should be talking about what they did, not what (s)he did. Not only are all engines failed rare (with fuel remaining in tanks), but so are landings on water. Many aircraft types never did land on water, and this might be the first time for an Airbus 320. So now that it HAS happened you can be sure there will be a lot of interest in what can be learned about these rare events.

10000+ views now, in 6 hours, that is not the usual amount of hits I get. Feel free to discuss the event itself here, but comments with speculations that are too far out or trying to outguess the reports outcome will be deleted if I find them inappropriate ...

man, i'd hate to be standing outside waiting for the rescue in -6 weather (-8 or -9 with windchill) in shirt and slacks. good thing the ferries saw it go down and were nearby.

this is really fantastic, after all the bad news we hear now daily.
I was on a business trip in Finland working late when this came up on CNN, was shocked at first and amazed / relieved when no casualties were reported. With no engines -WOW, I always thought these aircraft would drop like a stone without any engines...

And no airplanes had take-off from the Hudson. It might also be a great experience! :-D
By the way, congrats to the pilots!

Many experts do not hesitate to give their conclusions long before the findings are out. I do not care to speculate and guess before more facts are published.
