The Phoenix was on its way to a scrap yard in India on Monday night, 25 July 2011, when its anchor line broke causing it to drift off course and run aground at Sheffield Beach in Salt Rock, north of Durban, South Africa. Three helicopters were used to lift crew members one by one.The ship has a cargo of oil that has remained intact. The location of the ship, just in front houses, will make salvage operations extremely difficult.
It was raining quite heavily with gale force winds when I got to the scene. I had to wait for at least an hour before I could get my camera out and shoot in light drizzle. It was simply impossible to shoot a long exposure.
