Hedge I
This is an image made on my Holga on the first roll of film I have developed myself. (This one will crash and burn on Flickr :) )
The costs of having film processed by a firm were spiralling upwards as I am gradually shooting more film and so I have taken the plunge and got myself set up to process my own mono film.
At first it took so studying to work out what I needed and how it all works but once you actually do it, it is a lot easier than you think.
For the film buffs out there I used the Stand development process using Rodinal diluted a 3.3ml to 500ml of water. This takes just over an hour.
The film was Kodak Tri-X 400. I scanned the negs in to Lightroom as tiffs and dust spotted in Photoshop (there is a lot of dust!)
I will be writing a full blog post on the Stand development process (although others have covered it - just Google it). I will write as a newbie to this and hopefully cover the details that many who are experienced in film developing seem to gloss over as they know it so well, and don't realise what it is like to not know ANYTHING about the process.
I have to say I am hooked on using film. For my commercial work and some image making Digital is the only and best way to go but for what I am trying to achieve in my creative work, which I do for myself primarily, film is giving me the tool I need to get the look I am after. I have tried to get it digitally but I just can't. Film has a texture and feel that can't be replicated in Photoshop.
So, I have another roll of film in the soup at the moment so hopefully I will have some more film images soon.
I am going to be running a film based workshop soon along with a superb analogue photographer and master of alternative processes, Jonathan Stead. Sign up for my newsletter to hear more about it and get the dates.
Come on over to analogue photography and enjoy some real creativity!
