Thanks to a friend who volunteers for BirdsTLC, an organization that rehabilitates wild birds in Alaska, I was able to visit their Flight Center today.
This is the last step in their rehabilitation process... after this stage, the birds are released into the wild. The release is usually done with a ceremony with the public and media attending.
The Flight Center is large with a net canopy covering the bird area. Large predator birds can fly from one end to the other and build up their strength. We saw this one amazing Snowy Owl and six Eagles in various states of maturation, from very immature Eagles to nearly fully mature Eagles with their distinctive white heads.
The Snowy Owl swooped right down on us coming within inches of my head... it was kinda dramatic and a whole lot of fun. They seem much bigger with their wings extended and flying right at you! :)
