wood floor, white walls

These floors are total perfection. What kind of wood are they?

(yikes, I don't remember where this is from...)

Kevin: hard to tell.... Maybe southern white pine. Maybe hemlock, Maybe bleached fir. Definitely not a hard wood.

I am finding this all amusing. I think he needs a wood blog.

I also really enjoy that he smells of cedar and cypress a lot.

the grain and color look a little bit like ash.

me: someone else said ash on the floors
which is a hard wood, no?
are you failing the WOOD ID GAME?
Kevin: They could be ash! It would be a dark young ash though.

If Kevin starts a wood blog, I will be all over it. I am horrible at wood-ID!

Tell him the house is in Sweden. I thought spruce or pine?

me: anna says the house with the wood floors is in sweden
does that change your mind about wood
Kevin: NO. in fact it makes me think hemlock or pine more.
      me: what about spruce?
Kevin: very possible. crappy for most applications. Bugs and dryrot get it.
      indoors it wood be fine.

this is silly. we're making him a site for his furniture design and building stuff. will definitely add a wood blog ;D

I live in Sweden, I am an architect, I have been working selling wooden boards, my family owns a forest and my grand father used to own a saw mill.... So I should be perfectly able to answer if this is spruce or fir... but I'm not! Quite embarrassing! :-/

Anyway, I looked it up. Spruce has small and evenly spread twigs, fir has often bigger but more sparely spread twigs.... not much of a clue. But I think it's fir because the wood has a darker core, spruce is more evenly coloured.

I can't figure out if this floor is original or not. This apartment looks posh, maybe the floor used to be parquetry in the old days. Nowadays, people sometimes remove the worn floor to expose the underlying boards. But those boards often have a lot of twigs. This floor on the other hand looks very nice and clean, which makes me suspect it's put in later sometime.... Hmm...
