Hometown Dreams

Hometown Dreams

Photographed at The Big Nickel in Sudbury, Ontario (my hometown). I was up in Sudbury over the weekend for a family BBQ and took advantage of a clear night to make another star trail image.

This image is roughly a 50 minute exposure, including one frame during twilight that I jumped into and stared into the stars. This image was taken with a fisheye lens, but I manually corrected for the distortion in such a way that did not push the stars out of the frame (mostly using the warp tool in Photoshop).

Fierce Curiousity

Fierce Curiousity

Hoot Hoot! This Eurasian Eagle Owl played nice for the camera and I got a great close-up. It’s a captive bird, held at The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre just north of where I live. It’s probably the only place I’ll get to photograph this beautiful creature, as they aren’t native to this continent.

Here’s a tip for budding bird photographers: even in direct sunlight, don’t be afraid to use fill flash – it fills in the shadows so nicely on shots like this and really brightens the eyes. Many professional bird photographers use flash, sometimes with a “better beamer” flash extender for the light to reach the subject.

Fisheye Toronto

Fisheye Toronto

A fisheye image taken roughly 1800ft above the Toronto waterfront in a helicopter.

This image was taken April 25th, a day prior to posting it here in Flickr, and it came as quite the surprise. I received a phone call asking if I wanted to come along on an aerial shoot, and of course I said yes. I asked when, and the response was "right now". Yikes! This phone call woke me up, scramble!

This is a single image and cropped slightly on the top and bottom. I wanted a slight bend on the horizon for a bit of the "little planet" effect. It was fun and unexpected day!

Wilkins Walk

Wilkins Walk

Photographed in Wilkins Walk, Barrie Ontario.

This little patch of forest is right in the city and has a number of trails going through it. I jumped off the trails and just followed the stream until I found something interesting.

I was wearing rubber boots, but the water level was about an inch from the top of my boot... risky! :)

Fractal Geometry in Snowflakes

Fractal Geometry in Snowflakes

Sometimes the lack of fine details are replaced with strong patterns on the tiny snowflakes, resulting in an entirely different type of beauty. This little plate was photographed at 6:1 magnification, as close as I could get. The angle of the flash allowed for varying brightness on different topographical levels of the snowflake, and defines certain contours for added fun. :)
